Yep folks, Brokeback Mountain is a gay cowboy movie. But to label it with such a broad, simplistic and narrow-minded brush is to rob the film of its genuine power and depth. Because at its core, Brokeback Mountain is not a gay love story–it is simply a love story. I had already heard and read tons of articles written on the film before watching it with my girlfriend. However Heath Ledger was in it and he is one of my all-tim efavorite actors, since watching him in "A Knights Tale" and the "Patriot", so I watched the movie with my ever-so-pushy girlfriend and actually enjoyed it for its powerful and remarkable qualites. It's ultimately a story about the relationships that shape us -- for better and for worse.
This is a tale of two people (not just men), Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal), partime ranchers who meet on a summer sheepherding job in Wyoming under the shadow of Brokeback Mountain and soon, fall in love. Constrained by society and their own guilty consciences, the two soon part ways, marry women, and raise families in an effort to have a typical life as straight-men. And yet their bond is so strong that it brings them together time and time again, revealing a passion that, if anything, has grown across the test of time and distance. Tragically however, in order for them to be together, they must put-aside the lives of their families in the reckless pursuit of their true love. Some may call their love sin, but they surely cannot call it false.
Adapted by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana from Annie Proulx’s New Yorker short story, Brokeback Mountain is composed of unparalleled acting performances, impeccable artistic direction,(with-out-a-question, Ang Lee's Best Work) and deep and abiding emotion, its a universal and yet uniquely American love story.
