Never Surrender, a movie that boasts "The world's top MMA fighters in their first feature film!" and in fact it does with performances by:Georges "Rush" St-Pierre, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Anderson "The Spider" Silva, BJ "The Prodigy" Penn and Heath "The Texas Crazy Horse" of course if you weren't paying attention, this is a movie that lays claim to being the first feature film to ever feature some of the world's top MMA fighters, hell even the Director of the film, Hector Echavarria, himself is a former world class Mixed Martial Arts fighter. He is also known for such abysmal films as Confessions of a Pit Fighter, and for those of you that are thrilled with his acting skills, which combine all the emotional dexterity of a piece of paper and all the personality of a dirt road, here in-lys, the Biggest problem with this movie, and its a BIG PROBLEM. In their own right these guys are great MMA fighters but absolutly suck at ACTING! Its pretty clear none of these guys have had any sort of formal acting training.
The movie stars Hector Echavarria as Diego Carter, himself a world class Mixed Martial Arts fighter. Echavarria also lends his considerable talents? as the films director, producer and writer to Never Surrender. One might think of Echavarria as the Howard Hughes of MMA fighters turned filmmakers, but the comparison is only applicable in the number of hats worn, and certainly not in the amount of talent displayed. Mr. Echavarria as a filmaker also reminds me of Don "The Dragon" Wilson and his slew of Martial Arts Films.
Now lets get on to the Fight Game. Hector Echavarria Using his remarkable
all glory no brains style of acting, mixed with
his just stick the camara out there style of directing, and his
I don't need a great script because I can fight writing, Echavarria brings to life the story of Diego Carter, who after winning his latest championship MMA fight, is lured into an underground cage fight by the sultry Sandra (Silvia Koys), whose burning sexuality draws Diego in like a honey to a bee. It turns out that Sandra works for Seifer (Patrick Kilpatrick) a sadistic Russian mobster who runs an illegal fight competition that rewards it's victors with tons of money, and hot sex with beautiful women. (although I kinda like the sounds of that!) But wait now! there's a twist here. (Hah!) you never would have guessed that eh? Every fighter has his "consort", which is a nice way of saying a sexy slut he gets to hump, but if a fighter loses his match, the guy who beat him gets to screw his consort. So, in case some of you aren't following this incredible offer to the MMA gods, win the fight and you get a bunch of money, and you get to fuck the girlfriend of the guy whose ass you just beat. Of course, Diego wins his first fight then he chooses Sandra as his consort and then he gets quickly sucked into Seifer's sleazy world of
no holds barred fighting followed by great sex with all the hot chicks you could ask for.
Now It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Diego soon begins to realize that a life of beating the crap out of hulking dudes on steroids and then banging hot chicks with really great tits isn't all its cracked up to be. BTW ( what a horrible life for a MMA Star) Now realizing he actually has feelings for Sandra, Diego decides he wants out of the fight game, but the sadistic Seifer, who does things like beats a woman to death with his bare hands for not screwing his fighters, has other plans. Now the story just spirals even further down into a oofland! and is so poorly plausible that it makes you realize that Don The Dragon Wilson, and Jean Claude Van Damme might not have been so bad after all.
Now on with the final fight game action, which this film has tons of decent fight scenes, most are overly played out or just to clich'e and in addition to Echavarria's performances Never Surrender offers performances by other fighters like Georges "Rush" St-Pierre, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Anderson "The Spider" Silva, BJ "The Prodigy" Penn and Heath "The Texas Crazy Horse" Herring. But it's not really the fault of Rush, Rampage, The Spider, The Prodigy or The Texas Crazy Horse that their acting performances suck, because these distinguished gentlemen are working with a script that is just poor of anything valuable, (story, redeeming factors, concept ect.) in a film that is being directed by someone who at best just cares about fighting and nude women. Perhaps the best thing that can be said about Never Surrender is that there is a decent helping of nudity and sex scenes with some pretty hot ladies and Of course, the movie earns special points for montages cut to bad music. I lost count after the first few 80s style montages, which include the obligatory training sequence, and one that intercuts fight sequences with sex scenes, clearly giving the target audience what it wants, sex and violence! Never Surrender is not the worst movie you will ever see, which is probably the most positive thing that can be said about this movie. At the same time, the movie is so bad that it only warrants a viewing if your high, bored or have nothing in general going on with your life.
