Gone In 60 Seconds -2000

Director Dominic Sena

Writer : Scott Rosenberg

Runtime: 2 hrs 7 mins

Genre: Action/Adventure

Cast: Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, Robert Duvall

An updated flashy all star cast remake of the cult classic, Gone in Sixty Seconds, this big-budget remake of the late H.B. Halicki's 1974 indie hit, (Halicki, a stunt driver turned writer-director died while filming a stunt for the unfinished sequel in 1989) This newer bruckheimer production centers more on Bigger, faster, sexier cars and actors. It starts with a band of hand group of car thieves, led by Nicolas Cage as Memphis Raines as they attempt to steal 50 cars over a 72 hour time period. Director Dominic Sena infuses the movie with a high glossy style that one expects from a Jerry Bruckheimer production, while screenwriter Scott Rosenberg peppers the story with a whole host of weird characters and clever instances of dialogue. The film is entertaining but still senseless.  Having said that, Gone in Sixty Seconds is certainly not the true classic but its filled with charismatic performances by Cage, Jolie and Duvall and there's simply no denying the effectiveness of the climactic car chase that finds Raines on the run from dozens of determined cops, in one badass Shelby Mustang.

Whats odd to me is the filmmakers big car jump scene wasn't actually performed in reality, but was computer generated instead? Given that the film is based on the 1974 original by H.B. Halicki who was an ex-stuntman. This shows the general missing the point feeling surrounding the film. When Big Budget remakes older indie films they never stick with the basic formula that makes great indie films great, SIMPLE ENTERTAINMENT, as with this case, The indie film was much better.
